Four Hunters Arrested in Maharashtra Over Alleged Sexual Abuse of Protected Bengal Monitor Lizard

In April 2022, four hunters were arrested after allegedly sexually abusing a protected Bengal monitor lizard inside Chandoli National Park, part of the Sahyadri Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra.

According to investigators, the accused had illegally entered the core area of the reserve for hunting. Forest officials tracked them after noticing suspicious activity and a missing camera, using trap cameras and CCTV footage.

During the investigation, officials reportedly recovered videos related to the incident from the suspects' mobile phones, along with photographs and videos indicating the hunting of porcupines, deer, and pangolins.

The Bengal monitor lizard is a protected species under Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. The accused were booked under the Wildlife Protection Act, and at the time, investigators also considered additional charges under the then-applicable provisions of the Indian Penal Code.

The accused were initially remanded to forest custody. A local court in Ratnagiri later granted them bail, directing them to regularly report to the investigating forest officer while the investigation continued.

২০২২ সালের এপ্রিল মাসে মহারাষ্ট্রের সাহ্যাদ্রি টাইগার রিজার্ভের অন্তর্গত চান্দোলি ন্যাশনাল পার্কে একটি অত্যন্ত নৃশংস ঘটনার অভিযোগ সামনে আসে। বন দপ্তর চারজন শিকারিকে গ্রেপ্তার করে, যাদের বিরুদ্ধে একটি সংরক্ষিত বেঙ্গল মনিটর লিজার্ডের ওপর যৌন নির্যাতনের অভিযোগ আনা হয়।

তদন্তকারীদের দাবি, অভিযুক্তরা অবৈধভাবে সংরক্ষিত বনাঞ্চলের কোর জোনে শিকারের উদ্দেশ্যে প্রবেশ করেছিল। সন্দেহজনক গতিবিধি এবং একটি নিখোঁজ ক্যামেরার সূত্র ধরে ট্র্যাপ ক্যামেরা ও সিসিটিভি ফুটেজের সাহায্যে তাদের শনাক্ত করা হয়।

তদন্ত চলাকালীন অভিযুক্তদের মোবাইল ফোন পরীক্ষা করে ঘটনার ভিডিওসহ শজারু, হরিণ এবং প্যাঙ্গোলিন শিকারের ছবি ও ভিডিও উদ্ধার হয়েছে বলে অভিযোগ।

বেঙ্গল মনিটর লিজার্ড ভারতের Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972-এর Schedule I-এর অধীনে সংরক্ষিত একটি প্রজাতি। অভিযুক্তদের বিরুদ্ধে বন্যপ্রাণী সংরক্ষণ আইনের বিভিন্ন ধারায় মামলা দায়ের করা হয়। সে সময় ভারতীয় দণ্ডবিধির তৎকালীন প্রযোজ্য কিছু ধারায় অতিরিক্ত অভিযোগ আনার বিষয়টিও বিবেচনায় ছিল।

প্রাথমিকভাবে অভিযুক্তদের বন দপ্তরের হেফাজতে পাঠানো হয়। পরবর্তীতে রত্নাগিরির একটি স্থানীয় আদালত তাদের জামিন মঞ্জুর করে। জামিনের শর্ত অনুযায়ী, তদন্ত চলাকালীন তাদের নিয়মিত তদন্তকারী বন কর্মকর্তার কাছে উপস্থিত থাকতে নির্দেশ দেওয়া হয়।
